Abstract:

The origin and original body proportion is important question of the past of the breed. „Bos major, cinereus, cornibus plerumque longissimis”, the first, scientific definition of Bos Taurus Podolicus does not help to find out the body proportion of breed. The detailed and accurate picture in the appendix is more informative.

Our aim was to find out the main body proportion of the Hungarian Grey Cattle based on the depictions of literature.

We collect the useful German and Hungarian depictions of Wagner, Brockhaus, Meyers, Magyari, Monostori, Tormay, Wellmann and five pictures of Imre Bodó from lexicons and literature. The torso of five points on the body (6withers, hip, tuber ischiadicum, the point of Achilles is visible) we used.

We used in our study the methods of geometric morphometry.

The results has shown the original picture is similar Báró of Bodó and next Monostory which are not so muscular. Less similar is Tormay, Magyari and Bodó’s M line which are similar to a modern beef cattle.

The breed was like a modern beef cattle , but later after the second world war, the gen preserving breeding return to the poor muscular animals.
