Abstract:

Today, nonsteroid anti-inflammatory drugs are commonly used anagletics in animals. The toxicity of NSAIDs have been tested in birds, but usually they use mammalian data to calculate the dose for treatment. In this study, we tested the toxicity of acetylsalicylic acid and paracetamol on kidneys and the liver. The previous drug is registered for use in birds.

We used 18 broiler chickens for the experiment, divided into 2 groups: one group was partially denied water, and the other one was fully provided. In both groups, they were controls and treated birds. After the experiment, the chickens were euthanized, and we performed autopsy on their livers and kidneys. Blood tests and histopathologic samples were also analyzed. In the blood, we measured hematocrit, total protein, albumin, phosphate and uric acid levels using „Diagon” kit. We took histological samples from the kidneys and the liver, and used hematoxylin and eosin staining. By taking photographs in 400x zoom, we determined the necrotic index by calculating necrotic cells in the kidneys.

In this study, we aimed to determine how the inappropriate usage of NSAIDs can affect birds, and can cause ecolonomical damages. In the future, we would like to extend these experiments to other species of birds, such as parrots and pigeons.
