Veterinary sessionCerghizan Cynthia Karin - year 5 SzIU, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Department of State Veterinary Medicine and Agricultural Economics Supervisor: Fodor Kinga DVM During my work at The Veterinary Administration and Agricultural Economics Department, I examined how much familiar Hungarian people are with the legislation regarding protection of animals, and whether the farmers are aware of their legal obligations, or not. The research was conducted through a questionnaire survey, anonymously. Responses of 441 completed questionnaires were processed and evaluated according to the rules of market research. 61.1% of the fillers were 20-40 years old, slightly more than a quarter (25.5%) were 40-60 years old, while 8.6% were under the age of 20 and 4.8% belonged to the age group above 60 years. Specific activities related to animal welfare were admitted in 24.3% of cases. Our survey revealed that farmers are very often false informed regarding the animal protection laws and the percent of them giving a bad answer ranged between 25 and 75%, but there was a question to which 80% of them gave the wrong answer. For example, 26.8% of them answered incorrectly, that leaving droppings in public places is not illegal, 69.6% of them thought that the removal of the stink gland is not against the law, 50.1% were the opinion that the cat vaccination against rabies is mandatory, 17.2% did not know that watching a dog-fighting duel is offending the law, 42.2% thought illegal living with a dog in a 30sqm apartment and taking the dog for a walk without a muzzle too (50.1%). In 38.8% of cases they did not know that they could be subject of punishment if their animal runs away, 41% did not know that keeping a raccoon as pet is prohibited, according to 53.1% of them is permitted to apply dressage frightening device to the animal and about the CITES paper 63.7% of respondents did not know what's that. 28.3% of respondents thought that they do not need to ask for consent from their neighbor if they want to keep dangerous animals, and on average more than half of them (85.7% - 46.5%) did not know which animal belong to a species of dangerous animals group. One of the most surprising result of the study was that, unfortunately, there are many veterinary graduates who are not aware of a significant part of the legislation related to livestock and thus they can not inform the animal keepers about their obligations in accordance with, and dispel their vulgar errors. Our results show that even though there are outstanding animal welfare laws around compared to the world's other countries, is all in vain if they do not get to the livestock keepers, so in conclusion more emphasis should be placed on the guidance and information spreading in this field.
