Abstract:

Nowadays in Hungary there are serious disagreements about that the cattle of our ancestors would similar to the modern hungarian grey cattle about its appearance. According to the romantic notion which is mainly determined by the painting of Feszty Árpád, the cattles with big horns came to Carpathian Basin with our conquest ancestors. But others look at the big horns as the result of new eras breeding techniques, and they could do it by rights, because selection to big horns is greatly effective, and has a high h2 value.

In our research we looked for the answer, what similarities can be found among the recent hungarian grey cattle and the XVIII. century horn bones, based on CT scannings.

As test samples, we compared horn bones found in Buda castle (n=24 db), skulls from the collection of Museum of Hungarian Agriculture (n2=5) and from the Hortobágy gene preservation company (n3=7).

For our research we used the type ’Anyscan C’ CT equipment of Mediso Zrt. which has a large scanning apperture, but it was insufficient to scan the whole cattle skull in one record.

We compared the 3D models with morphometrical methods, because this method is the less sensible to the size differences of the object, only show the differences among shapes.

As the result of the comparing, I found that the horn bones could classify into two groups, which groups could not equated, aside from the differences in sizes.

As consequence, the shape of the compared cattles horns was different. The cause of this difference might be that these cattles did not belong to the average hungarian cattle population. The probability of this cause is very slight, because that times the Hungarian Kingdom was a cattle exporter. Another possibility, confirmed the initial theory, that these times, when the findings were formed, the hungarian cattle had not have as large horns as nowadays tipically.

Genetical researches would greatly complement the morphometrical researches for the finded horn bones.
