Abstract:

The purification and disinfection of different surfaces are parts of the everyday routine of veterinary practice. Although they are involved in everyday tasks, not enough attention is paid to their efficiency and more importantly to the measurement of it.

In the present study, the bacterial contamination of the examination tables, the operating tables and the phones of veterinary clinics with variant patient flow were investigated, but efficacy of the individual disinfectants was not examined. Sampling places were offered by 15 Hungarian veterinary clinics. For evaluation of the samples MicroTester wn as applied, which is based on the measurement of changes of reduction potential, thus it is suitable to the determination of total count. MicroTester provides a simpler and faster measuring method than the standard ones. In addition, the presence of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, two significant pathogen bacterial speciesin the veterinary practice, was also investigated. However, none of the samples contained these two relevant bacteria.

During the analysis of our results, the absence of acceptable ranges regarding the surface contamination in veterinary practice raises important questions. Establishing these ranges requires further research.
