TDK conference 2023Király Dóra - year 6 University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest, Department of Parasitology and Zoology Supervisor: Dr. Róbert Farkas Protostrongylidosis is widespread in sheep and goat flocks worldwide. The small lungworm species which belong to Protostrongylidae family have been known to occur in Hungary for a long time, but no research on the prevalence and treatment of the parasitosis has been carried out recently. The aim of the studies was twofold: (1) To obtain data on the prevalence of this parasitosis in grazing domestic sheep flocks. (2) Whether the infected animals can be treated effectively with Eprecis injection (Ceva Santé Animale) containing eprinomectin active substance (a.s.), which is approved for sheep? Pool faecal samples were collected from 46 sheep flocks in 36 localities in 11 counties of Hungary. In one sheep farm, 12 out of 24 sheep infected with small lungworms were treated once with Eprecis injection (at the dose of 0.2 mg a.s./kg bodyweight). The other 12 sheep remained untreated. Faecal samples were taken from each animal of the two groups once a week for four weeks. Lungworm larvae were examined by a simple modification of the Baermann method. The species were identified with morphological examination of the first stage larvae. Nine (19.6%) flocks were found to be infected with one or more of the four lungworm species identified worldwide. Protostrongylidosis of sheep is present in both parts of the country despite the deworming of flocks. At the beginning of the treatment study all the animals were infected with one or more small lungworm species in both groups. On days 9 and 17 post treatment 8 and 2 out of 12 treated sheep were infected, respectively. No lungworm larvae were found in the samples collected on days 22 and 31 post treatment. The majority (7-11) of the untreated sheep remained infected during the study. It can be concluded that the single dose of the injectable product can eliminate the small lungworm infection in sheep.
