TDK conference 2018Kimball Anna Krisztina - year 6 University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest, Department Animal Breeding, Nutrition and Laboratory Animal Science Supervisor: Dr. Boglárka Vincze Newborn foals are unprotected without an adequate level of immunoglobulin in the first hours of their life, hence, the control of the post partum serum antibody levels is highly recommended. Twelve mare-foal pairs were tested in the first 32 hours of life during this study. The animals have been kept on two differently managed farms (A and B) and tested with rapid on-side tests, refraktometer (plasma total protein) and laboratory IgE ELISA test. Blood samples were collected at different time periods (0-6 and 24-32 hours post partum, 1 week of age) and after centrifugation the samples were stored at -20 °C until use. Significant differences were detected in IgE-levels in the 2 farms, but the difference was not as high in the case of total protein levels. Immunoglobulin E could be detected just after delivery in some foals before the colostrum intake. Mare and foal IgE levels showed the same trends, but it was not significant. Rapid tests could reflect the antibody levels of newborn foals. To conclude, on-site farm rapid tests are useful and worth using, but in case of any doubt, sensitive laboratory check is advised. Furthermore, the management of the breeding farm has an influence on the antibody levels of newborn foals. List of lectures |
